Journalism is the gathering, analyzing, interpreting and distribution of information through media. It is searching for the truth in an ethical manner to fulfill the civic duty of helping citizens get the information they need to make good decisions. There is a creative writing element to this work as students craft interesting narratives to convey the information they find. Writing is king in this field, even in broadcast journalism. It is a field where you are on the front line of history each day, and large audiences will know your work well. All journalism students develop the necessary writing and visual skills that allow for production of stories across platforms – print, broadcast and Web. We encourage involvement and real world experience. We do this in several ways:
Internships. Whether you are interested in print, broadcast or Web, we encourage all students to pursue internships with local or national media outlets. To aid in the process, we have an extensive internship database.
Student Media. Our award-winning Student Media comprises five student-run outlets; Tiger Television, The Daily Reveille, KLSU, The Legacy magazine and Gumbo yearbook. The journalism program is closely tied to Student Media and we encourage our students to get involved early.
SPJ. We encourage students to join the LSU chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). SPJ is the nation's largest journalism organization and a great way to network and interact with media professionals and journalism peers
Manship Show Highlights. Student work is annually showcased in the Manship Highlight Show. The half-hour show is produced at the end of the semester and features the best visual work of our journalism students. The show airs on Baton Rouge cable.
