Kinesiology Alumni Connections
Lauren Mestayer Barfield
Lauren Mestayer Barfield is a native of New Iberia, LA. She graduated from LSU in 2001 with a BS in Kinesiology, Human Movement Science Pre-med concentration. She received her medical degree from the LSU Medical School of New Orleans in 2005 and did her Internal Medicine residency at Earl K. Long Charity Hospital in Baton Rouge from 2005-2008.
Lauren recalled that one of her biggest challenges occurred two months after she finished her residency when Katrina devastated New Orleans and south Louisiana. She and many other doctors saw a high volume of patients in a short period of time in make shift conditions. Another challenge that faces many female doctors who have children is the time commitment involved with a successful practice. She encourages women to “Go for It” and not listen to detractors that say you have to make too many compromises to have a successful career and a family. Lauren helps our department by accepting undergraduate pre-medical students in our internship class for an 80 hour experience under her supervision.
The most rewarding part of her job is the long standing relationships that she is able to develop with her patients and their extended families. Getting to know their personal stories over time is helpful and fulfilling.
Lauren’s advice to prospective students is, “strive to be diverse, be able to articulate the true reason for your passion for medicine…everyone has good grades, good MCAT scores, and an interest in helping people…you need to stand out…how are you different and what unique quality do you bring to the table?”
Lauren and her husband, Dr. Louis Barfield, have three children and a stepson who is an LSU student. If you would like to connect/reconnect with Lauren her office phone number is 225-765-8829.
