Dr. Peter Doran Joins LSU Geology & Geophysics

We are pleased to announce Dr. Peter Doran will be joining the Department of Geology & Geophysics as the first holder of the John Franks Endowed Chair. Dr. Doran comes to the department from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he served as Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences. 

New Updates to "Old" Howe Russell

Thanks to a Louisiana Board of Regents grant, the lobby and hallway of the "Old" Howe Russell Kniffen Building has been given a fresh update complete with new furniture, displays, and more geoscience themed exhibits. The grant came to department through the hard work of Associate Professors Phil Bart and Sophie Warny, who championed the renovation.

Recent Graduate Edward Lo's Thesis Published in Geo-Marine Letters

Edward Lo (B.S. 2013) has had his undergraduate thesis research published in the journal Geo-Marine Letters. Ed worked alongside Dr. Sam Bentley for the study titled, "Experimental study of cohesive sediment consolidation and resuspension identifies approaches for coastal restoration: Lake Lery, Louisiana." Ed  was recently selected a recipient of a Fulbright Award and plans to continue his future research interests in Brazil. 

Coastal Studies Institute Receives NSF Coastal SEES Award

The LSU Coastal Studies Institute, directed by G&G Professor Sam Bentley, will be receiving a NSF Coastal SEES Award for their project “DELTA SEES: Sustainability of Deltaic Coastlines – The Trillion Dollar Problem." Dr. Robert Twilley is the lead investigator with Dr. Bentley filling the role of senior co-investigator.

Suniti Karunatillake Awarded LaSPACE Research Enhancement Award

Dr. Suniti Karunatillake has been named a finalist to receive a $32,000 research enhancement award from the Louisiana Space Consortium. The award will help fund research conducted by Dr. Karunatillake's Planetary Science Lab titled "Remote Sensing, Ground Infrared and Neutron Spectroscopy to Support Planetary Analog Exploration"
