Karen Callender
Coordinator of Field Experiences
Karen Callender holds three degrees from LSU including a Bachelor of Science (1-8 Elementary Certification), a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration. Her P-12 school experiences include teaching first, second, and eighth grades in Louisiana public schools. She has also worked as an administrator at the elementary level in both Louisiana and Texas. She currently serves as Coordinator of Field Experiences in the College of Education where she works closely with schools to coordinate field work and experience for LSU education majors who are teacher candidates. Dr. Callender’s recent course offerings include Supervision of Student Teaching and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for graduate students at LSU. Additionally, she has taught Curriculum Disciples: Elementary and Middle School Mathematics, Introduction to College Study, Introduction to Education, and Education Technology courses for the College of Education.
Dr. Callender is part of the leadership team for the LSU College of Education’s three Professional Development Schools in West Baton Rouge Parish School District that focus on special education. Dr. Callender serves on many committees including the LSU College of Education Diversity Committee. In 2007, Dr. Callender served as the Louisiana representative on an NCATE Board of Examiners team. She belongs to several local and national organizations including Phi Delta Kappa, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and was a founding member of the National Professional Development Schools Association and continues to present annually at the National Professional Development Schools Conference. She is a member of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) and the ATE Leadership SIG. At the state level of this affiliate organization, Louisiana Association of Teacher Educators (LA ATE), she is a Board Member and past President. In 2008, she chaired the LA Association of Teacher Educators’ statewide Student Teacher Conference.
