Assumptions That Aren't Safe

He will fall in love with a she.

 

She will fall in love with a he.

 

All parents will be horrified if their kid is gay.

 

One sexual interaction with a member of one's sex will "turn" someone gay.

 

Gay behavior / identity is a "phase" that a person outgrows.

 

A gay identity can be "interrupted" or "undone" by appropriate intervention by someone in authority (parent, counselor, etc.).

 

Female athletes are gay.

 

Male athletes aren't gay.

 

A heterosexual lifestyle is automatically superior to a gay lifestyle.

 

Straight relationships last, gay relationships don't.

 

Gay people grow old alone . . . straight people won't.

 

Gay relationships don't / won't / can't last.

 

Heterosexual relationships do / will / can last.

 

Not having older gay/ lesbian role models around is healthy for gay college students.

 

Gay staff or faculty will want to go to bed with students.

 

A gay staff member/RA/professor is more biased toward homosexuality than a straight staff member /RA/professor is biased against it.

 

There aren't any gay staff, students, or faculty at this school.

 

People can work/study at their best and be productive, healthy, and happy if they feel they must deny or hide their identity in order to stay in housing or keep their jobs.
